Splitting vs. lumping similar claims

noteJun 22, 2026

As in biology, there is a tension between splitting and lumping. Language is subtle, and the boundary between one claim and another is not obviously easier to define than that between species. Still, a line must be drawn, and a line can be drawn. If opposing sides of an argument would both agree two propositions are the same claim, then they are the same claim.

Having decided that two propositions are the same claim, one still has to choose its canonical form.
